Amavasai / Amavasya
Amavasai / Amavasya is the first tithi, or the first day in the waxing and waning of the Moon’s passage. Tithi is a Sanskrit word meaning distance. It is the distance between the Sun and Moon in the galaxy. The Moon is invisible on Amavasya. Even though considered a good day, auspicious events like marriages are not conducted on that day. Like avoiding Amavasai, people also avoid a month, on which occur two Amavasai / Amavasya. This is called Malamasam. Malamasam occurs approximately once every 18 years. Chaturdasi, the day before and Prathamai tithi that comes a day after Amavasai / Amavasya are also considered inauspicious days. New activities are not conducted on these days, because it is believed that any new activity may run into trouble with loss, enmity and disease as a result.
